Hello, Its good to know that you are beginner but interested to know about Outlook. There are two different format of PST files. Namely, ANSI and UNICODE format. The older version of outlook before 2003 uses ANSI format. Whereas, Outlook 2003 and later versions such as Outlook 2007 and 2010 uses UNICODE format. ANSI format has the size limitation of 2GB. If the PST file exceeds this limit, it might undergo severe PST file corruption. Where as UNICODE format can store PST file up to 20 GB and more.
You did not mentioned the Outlook version you are using. If you are using older version prior to 2003, it's ANSI PST format or if your Outlook is 2003 or later versions, it's UNICODE format. As far as the better format is concerned, obviously UNICODE is better as it does not have size restriction of 2 GB. In fact Outlook 2007 can store PST files up to 20 GB of size. If Outlook PST file gets damaged or corrupted due to oversize, it is advised to truncate or divide the large PST files into smaller ones. Alternatively third party PST repair tool can also be used for repairing the PST file corruption.
