Scanpst.exe Vs Scanost.exe. What is the difference?

My outlook 2007 is unable to load as it is experiencing severe corruption. While, I was searching for the Scanpst.exe location to resolve the issue, came across the Scanost.exe right next to it. Can it be used or What is the difference between the two.

Scanpst.exe or inbox repair tool is a utility that has been designed by Microsoft and is present in almost every version of outlook such as XP, 2000, 2003, 2007 and latest 2010 for scanning the personal storage files and folders. However the location varies depending on the windows version of operating system and is stored as hidden file location.

OST files are almost similar to PST files but it stores files of larger sizes and uses hard drive to store them locally and not on mail servers. OST files are generally created or formed when the outlook users make use of offline folders option.

Scanost.exe or OST Intergrity Check Tool is used to scan only .ost files and folders. Moreover, Scanpst.exe utility can even be used when the user is offline. But it is not the case with OST.exe as it requires exchange server connection to run Scanost.exe. Scanpst.exe can be used to fix both .pst and .ost related issues. These were some of the important comparisons between Scanpst.exe Vs Scanost.exeutility.
