It is true that Scanpst.exe or inbox repair tool has been designed and included in every version of the Outlook to fix issues related to the corruption of .pst file format. But unfortunately, it does not resolves all such issues. It is possible, once in a while that Scanpst.exe hangs up and stops to respond while searching for the damaged or corrupted .pst files.
One of the possible reason can be the seemingly oversized .pst files exceeding more than 2GB. In such event, this utility becomes worthless. However this may not be the only valid reason behind Scanpst.exe hanging up. Severe header corruption or faulty installation of Scanpst.exe file may be some other probable causes.
As far as solution to the above problem is concerned, it is advisable to wait for some more time in case the Scanpst.exe hangs or not responding after clicking the “repair” button as your PC might be slow in performance or try to install the application once again. But, still if it is unable to respond, then you need to divide or split the oversized PST files into smaller .pst files.
However, if still unable to resolve the issue, try third party PST repair tool for best results of repairing the corrupt .pst file format. I hope this would ultimately resolve the problem.
